Lisbon, Portugal (overnight) »   Embark pm
Cosmopolitan Lisbon was the center of the world's last great colonial empire. Today the city nostalgically reveres its imperial past while adapting to Portugal's role as a member of the European Economic Community. Although located on the Atlantic coast, Lisbon has the soul of a Mediterranean city with Moorish castles, pastel and white buildings, orange-tiled roofs and luminous blue skies. Set amid the hills and valleys of the northern shore of the River Tagus, it is one of the loveliest capitals in the world.

Azores/Ponta Delgada, The Azores » 10 am 7 pm
A cluster of islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, between Portugal and North America, The Azores were established in 1427 by Portuguese explorers. Due to its strategic location, The Azores were often the focus of battles and pirate threats. Today, Ponta Delgada exudes all of the grandeur and exotic appeal of its past with sumptuous houses and twisting streets that have survived the memory of past nobles and aristocrats.

Praia da Vitoria/Azores, Portugal » 8 am 6 pm

With vibrant colors characteristic of the Azores and a history characteristic of its ties to Portugal, Praia da Vitória offers a taste of Europe out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, miles from any European shore. A pleasant pedestrianized district of the city is something you might find in a historic mainland village, charming with its inviting shops and notable buildings, including the Church of Santa Cruz, a white-trimmed-in-ochre structure founded in the 15th century. Atop a mountain ridge just outside of town is a spacious park, providing breathtaking views of the countryside and Atlantic Ocean. Portugal, located nearly one thousand miles away, is too distant to see, but a trip back down to the narrow avenues of the city affords a close-up look at Europe’s contributions to a thoroughly delightful island.

Oct 20, Saturday Madeira/Funchal, Portugal » 8 am 5 pm
The sub-tropical island of Madeira, often called the "Garden of the Atlantic," was the favored retreat of Sir Winston Churchill. This blissful island is a wonderland of rugged mountains, colorful flowers and ornate architecture.

Santa Cruz de la Palma, Spain » 9 am 6 pm

Santa Cruz de la Palma hugs the east coast of the island of La Palma, part of the Canary Islands, a Spanish-held archipelago wrought from volcanic activity. Add together all those locational and cultural features – an island, Spanish, volcanic – and you get a marvelous place to explore and embrace. The old town showcases a Caribbean feel and color palette, with its distinctly balconied buildings painted in hues of blue, green, orange and burgundy. Cobbled streets lead to a marketplace where equally colorful products are sold, including mangoes, papayas, passion fruit and sugar cane. In fact, sugar once was the high-calorie energy source for the local economy. Today, bananas are the main export, along with memories gathered by visitors who happily investigate the city’s historic lanes.

Oct 22, Monday
Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands » 8 am 6 pm
The largest and most populated island of the seven which make up the Canary Archipelago, Tenerife lies northwest of the African continent. Its shape is triangular and was formed as a result of the massive volcanic eruptions, which once dominated the area. The island's original economy was based on agriculture, including the harvesting of bananas, potatoes and tomatoes. However, new industrial products and activities, such as oil, tobacco and paper mills, have slowly emerged. Nonetheless, tourism remains the main industry of Tenerife.

Canary Islands/Arrecife, Spain » 8 am 6 pm

Arrecife, the capital of the island of Lanzarote, is a modern port city, with a pleasant sense of hustle and bustle, yet also a sense of its seafaring past. Its picturesque hub is centered around El Charco, or "the puddle," and its seafront boasts the Gran Hotel, a symbol of Arrecife's commitment to a bright and prosperous role in tourism. For years, the building was a mere shell, until developers snatched it up for a complete overhaul. Now a 5-star property, the Gran Hotel invites visitors to stroll through its gardens and enjoy its waterfront location. Two other landmarks are emblematic of Arrecife: Castillo San Gabriel and Castillo San Jose. Dating from 1590 and 1730 respectively, both stand guard over the harbor and once defended the island against pirates.

Oct 24, Wednesday
Agadir, Morocco » 8 am 4 pm
A popular destination for sun-worshippers, Agadir is the center of the Barbary Coast's chic resort area and enjoys a lovely warm temperature year-round. A modern city, Agadir was completely rebuilt after a devastating earthquake struck in 1960. In sharp contrast, the nearby antique city of Taroudant makes a pleasant destination for explorers.
Oct 25, Thursday
Casablanca, Morocco » 9 am 10 pm
Centuries-old Casablanca, Morocco's largest city and principal port, lies on the Atlantic coast of North Africa. Awaiting your discovery is a timeless blend of Arabic culture and French sophistication, as seen by the imposing administrative buildings that recall years of colonial influence. Although the spirits of Bergman and Bogart still linger in the narrow alleyways of the old Medina, this gleaming white city has a firm grasp on the 21st century. Today, it encompasses broad palm-lined boulevards, attractive public parks and soaring high-rises. Bargain-filled souks are reminders of mysterious Africa and shopping aficionados will delight in scouring narrow alleyways for great buys in leatherwork, pottery, carved woodwork and Moroccan rugs.
